Simple Steps to Make Your Own Website
- Get a Domain Name & Hosting (costs far less than you think)
- Choose a Web Design Platform like WordPress
- Build your website using Drag & Drop Interface, without any Programming & then Launch it!
Creating a website from scratch isn’t as difficult as you might think.
Why?
About ten years ago, website building was still pretty much in its infancy. Nowadays, even a complete beginner can learn how to create a website without any basic computer skills. And then you can begin email marketing to your prospects with email marketing software..
Whether you’re a tech-savvy person or a novice, this guide will help you get started and build your own website.
I have also covered the most common mistakes people make when building a website so that you can avoid them.
And to break down the process, I have divided it into a 12-point checklist you can follow when building your website.
Step 1: Register a Domain Name
First things first: every website needs a name.
Without a name (also known as a domain name), your website simply cannot function.
Think of it as a street address for a house, where the address is the domain name, and the house is your website.
By owning a domain name, you’ll always have complete control over your website, no matter what happens. Domains cost around $10-$50/year.
When choosing a domain name, there are a few rules you should keep in mind:
- If you’re setting up a business website, your domain name should match your company name, for example, YourCompanyName.com
- If you’re planning on making a personal website for yourself, then YourName.com is always a great option.
- Don’t dwell too much. Most of the best and most unique domain names were bought up decades ago. Go with something that matches your website.
Step 2: Choose a Website Building Platform
Your next step is to pick a platform on which your website will be built on.
However, there are hundreds of different tools (and ways) to build a website.
And the first mistake that most people often make is they pick the wrong platform to create their site.
If you choose a platform that isn’t good or flexible enough, you’ll need to start again with another platform.
It’s doable but not recommended (since it wastes your time and money).
To help make your decision easier, I’ve compiled the list of major tools used to build websites currently.
- WordPress 67%
- Shopify 6%
- Wix 3%
The website building tool used most often is WordPress. And it is the most popular for a reason.
WordPress is the most flexible (free) tool to build any kind of website, from small to large, and it’s suitable for beginners.
Step 3: Start Building Your Website
Now for the exciting part. Setting Up a Website…
To start setting up a website with WordPress, you first need to sign up with a preferred web hosting provider.
Luckily, almost all well-established and reliable web hosting companies have integrated one-click installation for WordPress, making it very easy for you.
Go for HostGator or InMotion Hosting. For Fast loading websites, Cloudways is also another recommended Website Hosting company.
Step 4. Choose a web hosting service.
There are several good hosting companies in Singapore and abroad that you can choose from.
They are pretty affordable now. If you need any suggestions, we can help you choose one.

Step 5. Choose a hosting plan
All hosting companies have a basic plan for beginners that is sufficient to get started.
And you can always upgrade as your website grows. Elementor offers a cloud based hosting. This is a great option.
If you plan to create multiple websites, do check out a plan that offers you a choice of creating multiple websites at no additional cost, within your hosting plan.
We always suggest choosing a simple and basic plan that reduces our initial cost overlay.
Step 6. Set up your domain name
Point the domain to your hosting and that’s it.
Now anyone looking for your website will be able to key in the domain name, and they will be automatically routed to your newly setup Hosting account.

Didn’t I tell you it will be easy!
Step 7. Install WordPress
Most hosting companies install WordPress for you. So nothing to do here. Done!
But if you need to do this step manually, then go to WordPress.org and download the latest WordPress software for free.
It’s easy and simple with the famous 1 Click Install process for WordPress.
Step 8. Start customizing your WordPress site
The fun part begins here. We begin to choose a colour scheme, what content to add, what will be the key menu items etc.
So we will do some basic setup & customization like setting up the URL, the site’s permalink structure, creating users for testing, and adding a site icon.
Step 9. Pick your Theme
WordPress is littered with thousands of amazing themes to choose from – all absolutely at no cost to you.
Good themes like Astra Theme, or the Generate Press theme are fast loading, and quite good. They are very good for beginners.
Don’t like a theme? Simply change it. All it takes is a click and less than a second. Voila.
Now you have a new theme!
Step 10. Customize Your Design
With the theme chosen, we design the website pages. We will need a Drag and Drop Website Builder like Elementor to design the pages.
If you want to customize the colors or layout – centered, 2 pane, 3 panes, you can do so now.

Step 11: Create the Basic Pages first
Every website must have a few basic pages that are really essential.
- Home
- About Us
- Contact Us
- Products
- Services
- Privacy Policy
- Terms & Conditions
- Refunds, Returns
- Blog Pages
Building these pages is the fun part. Simply drag and drop images, videos, and Text into your canvas.
Then change the format, colour, and layout the way you want.
Add some animation, and you have got a decent, dynamic website.

Step 12: Launch the Site & Begin to Promote & Market your Website
Marketing is the thing that we do the whole day, week and year. You’ve got to market your products and services on the internet, wherever your audience and prospects lurk.
It could be in social media channels like Instagram or TikTok, Facebook Groups, YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit or other traditional channels.
